How to Write a Character Reference Letter

(With examples)

Character reference letters can be written by friends and acquaintances rather than just past employers writing employment reference letters. These are great tools to help boost your chance of getting a job when you do not have a lot of experience or do not have a great history with former employers. While these letters can be written by friends they are best used when written by colleagues, vendors or customers and clients. If you have any volunteering experiences, ask other members or supervisors for a character reference letter. If you do not know what a character reference letter looks like he is an example:

Step One: How do you know the person. This sets up the entire letter. This is why you shouldn't use drinking buddies. For example:

-I have worked with John for 10 years.

-I have lived next door to John since he was 13.

-I have known John in different capacities since we were in high school.

Step Two: What has the person done for you. For example:

-When I broke my leg, John helped out around the house, getting the mail, cleaning up and walking the dog.

-John has been my son's camp counselor for several years.

-John and I worked on a number of projects together while we were both employed at Lundberg Enterprises.

Step Three: What positive characteristics have you observed the person as having. For example:

-During my time with John, I have known him to be very responsible, organized and efficient.

-John has always had terrific interpersonal and sales skills.

-John has always shown a great prowess in his writing and communication abilities.

Step Four: Recommend the person. For Example:

-I highly recommend John for any position within your company.

-I would recommend John for absolutely any endeavor he wanted to take part in.

And there is your letter. Just a couple of paragraphs aught to do it.

Happy Recommending.
